Artists for a New South Africa
ANSA is a non-profit organization working in the U.S. and South Africa to combat HIV/AIDS, assist children orphaned by the disease, advance civil rights, safeguard voting rights, educate and empower youth, and build bonds between our nations. ANSA operates in partnership with effective grassroots organizations on the front lines of these issues and makes a substantial difference by: providing grants; raising public awareness; galvanizing support; building coalitions; focusing on the root causes of social problems; and developing new programs that address urgent needs.
ANSA was established in 1989 to support the struggle against apartheid. ANSA’s founders and leadersincluding Alfre Woodard, Samuel L. Jackson and LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Carlos and Deborah Santana, Alexandra Paul, Danny Glover, Mary Steenburgen, Jurnee Smollett, and many othersremain dedicated to furthering equality and social justice in both countries. ANSA’s efforts have strategic, tangible impact. In the past 10 years alone, ANSA has raised over $8 million for South African non-profits, shipped more than 70 tons of medical supplies and books to impoverished communities, advocated successfully for improved government policies, and educated millions of people across the U.S. and the African continent about HIV/AIDS and voting rights.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is the Honorary Chair of ANSA’s Amandla AIDS Fund (AAF), which was founded in 2003, thanks to the generosity and commitment of the Santanas. Guided by an advisory board of noted South African HIV/AIDS and public health experts, activists, and leaders, AAF provides significant funding and support for pivotal South African efforts that combat HIV/AIDS and mitigate the societal impact of the pandemic. ANSA and AAF also work with South African partners to create groundbreaking, collaborative programs, including It Takes a Village, which provides community-based essential services to orphans and vulnerable children.
"We can really do something to change the world. The time has come to stop talking and start taking some action. If everyone who wants to see an end to poverty, hunger, and suffering speaks out, the noise will be deafening." -Archbishop Tutu
In honor of Archbishop Tutu, a portion of the proceeds of this event will be donated to two of his favorite South African charities that serve children in need: Philani and Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.
