Know Your Rights/Election Protection (EP), founded by People for the American Way Foundation (PFAWF) is the most comprehensive U.S. national nonpartisan effort to prevent Election Day disenfranchisement. Since 2002, ANSA has been working with PFAWF and a coalition of many other civil rights and voter education groups on this nonpartisan program to strengthen American democracy.
EP aims to safeguard voters' rights, particularly for African Americans, Latinos, and other historically disenfranchised communities. EP encourages voter participation, advises voters of their legal rights and provides volunteers and poll monitors to ensure fair elections. From now through Election Day, November 2, 2004, EP offers free and immediate legal assistance to people who encounter obstacles to registering or voting via a toll free number: 1-866-OUR-VOTE.
ANSA's efforts to support this vital program include producing radio public service announcements (PSAs) featuring notable artists, and coordinating their participation in public events. Artists who have recorded PSAs include: Angela Bassett, Charles S. Dutton, Danny Glover, Robert Guillaume, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Rock, Sinbad, Blair Underwood, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Vanessa Williams and Alfre Woodard. Take a listen:

On November 2, Americans will elect our President, 11 governors, 34 Senators, and all 435 Members of the House of Representatives. Our choices will affect the direction of the nation, and the world, for decades to come, and it is essential that every vote be counted. Recent elections have proved that key rights protected by the Voting Rights Act, and other laws, are often ignored or subverted. EP works to prevent this, through extensive field operations in Florida, Illinois, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. EP is also organizing media campaigns in additional states to help ensure the fairness of these elections, and to increase turnout at the polls by people of color.
