ANSA's primary election project was organizing the Democracy Tour to South Africa--a delegation of
American artists-including Danny Glover, Angela Bassett, CCH Pounder, Alexandra Paul and Delroy
Lindo-who joined with South African artists, to work alongside grassroots voter education organizations
to help reach the 21 million black, Indian and "colored" South Africans who had never before been
allowed to cast ballots.
With the end of apartheid and Nelson Mandela's inauguration as president, ANSA centered its work on
helping to rectify some of the problems created or exacerbated by apartheid. In consultation and
partnership with South African NGO's, leaders, artists, agencies of the new government, and grassroots
groups, ANSA targeted key issues and partnered with effective South African organizations where our
involvement and available resources could have significant impact. Simultaneously, ANSA utilized its
media access to continue raising America public awareness about South Africa and encourage increased support.
Since August 1995, ANSA has raised more than $8 million for effective South African non-profit organizations. Since 1996, ANSA has shipped more than 70 tons of medical supplies and books to impoverished communities.
ANSA has also led eight working delegations of artists,
philanthropists, activists and inner city youth to South Africa, who have actively taken part in
projects including voter education, grant distribution, and the construction of homes in the township of Orange Farm.
Since its inception, ANSA has played a unique role, originally for the anti-apartheid movement and later in support of efforts to:
- Build South African democracy
- Provide material aid
- Fund sustainable development
- Support South African art and culture
- Advance education, social welfare and economic parity
- Preserve the history of South Africa's quest for liberation for future generations
ANSA has contributed through fundraising and grantmaking, coordination of educational and media campaigns and
events, celebrity mobilization, strategic media and public relations assistance, and harnessing our members'
special talents, skills and visibility to provide support.
